Avengers: Endgame (2019) opens in the grim aftermath of Thanos’s “Snap,” with the surviving heroes—led by Captain America (Chris Evans) and a grieving Thor—tracking the Mad Titan to a remote planet to reclaim the Infinity Stones. Their mission ends in bitter defeat when they discover Thanos has destroyed the stones to prevent his work from being undone, leading Thor to execute him in a fit of rage. Five years later, the world remains a desolate, mourning place until Scott Lang (Ant-Man) accidentally escapes the Quantum Realm, bringing with him a desperate theory: “Time Heist” via quantum travel.
The remaining Avengers reunite to execute this impossible plan, which requires convincing a retired and reluctant Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) to leave his quiet life with Pepper and their daughter, Morgan. After Tony perfects the time-travel technology, the team splits into groups to retrieve the Infinity Stones from various points in their own history, including the 2012 Battle of New York and 2014 Morag. This “heist” serves as a nostalgic journey through the MCU’s greatest hits, but it comes at a heavy cost when Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) sacrifices her life on Vormir to secure the Soul Stone.
The team returns to the present and Bruce Banner (now “Smart Hulk”) successfully uses a Stark-designed gauntlet to snap his fingers, successfully restoring the trillions of lives lost five years prior. However, their victory is short-lived as a 2014 version of Thanos, who discovered their plan through a nebula-sync, time-travels to the present and obliterates the Avengers’ headquarters. A brutal, three-on-one duel ensues between Thanos and the “Big Three”—Iron Man, Thor, and a Mjölnir-wielding Captain America—leaving Steve Rogers standing alone against an entire alien armada.
In one of cinema’s most iconic moments, the restored heroes return through dozens of mystical portals, led by Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and the Spider-Man, for a massive final stand against Thanos’s forces. The battlefield is a chaotic clash of cosmic and terrestrial powers, culminating in a desperate race to keep the gauntlet away from the Titan. Realizing there is only one way to win, Tony Stark tricks Thanos, steals the stones, and delivers the final snap with the words “I am Iron Man,” disintegrating the enemy army at the cost of his own life.
The film concludes with a poignant series of goodbyes, starting with Tony’s funeral, which brings together every corner of the MCU. Thor joins the Guardians of the Galaxy, leaving Valkyrie to lead New Asgard, while Steve Rogers travels back in time to return the stones and finally live out his life with Peggy Carter. Returning as an old man, Steve passes his shield to Sam Wilson (Falcon), effectively ending the “Infinity Saga” while passing the torch to a new generation of heroes.
