The Batman (2022) is a gritty noir crime thriller that follows Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) in his second year as a masked vigilante in Gotham City. As the Riddler’s traps become increasingly lethal, he exposes shocking secrets about the Wayne family legacy, suggesting that Thomas Wayne was not the saint the city believed him to be. This revelation shatters Bruce’s worldview and creates friction with his loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), who narrowly survives a mail bomb intended for Bruce. The mystery culminates in the capture of the Riddler, revealed to be Edward Nashton, a forensic accountant who felt abandoned by the city’s failed social systems and viewed Batman as an inspiration for his crusade.
The film’s climax shifts from a detective story to a disaster epic when the Riddler’s true plan is enacted: the bombing of Gotham’s sea walls, which floods the city. A radicalized militia of the Riddler’s followers attempts to assassinate the newly elected Mayor, Bella Reál, at Madison Square Garden. Batman is forced to step into the light to protect the citizens, realizing that “Vengeance” is not enough to save Gotham; he must instead become a symbol of hope to lead the survivors through the wreckage.
In the aftermath, Selina decides to leave Gotham for Blüdhaven, believing the city is beyond saving, while Bruce chooses to stay and help with the recovery efforts. The movie ends with a glimpse of the Riddler in Arkham State Hospital, befriending an “unseen prisoner” (the Joker), hinting at future chaos. Bruce’s closing narration confirms his evolution from a vengeful shadow to a protector, setting the stage for the upcoming sequel, The Batman Part II.
