Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) begins by recontextualizing the destructive climax of Man of Steel from the perspective of Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck). As he watches Metropolis crumble and his employees die during Superman’s battle with General Zod, Bruce develops a deep-seated distrust and hatred for the alien. Two years later, the world is divided over Superman (Henry Cavill); some view him as a god-like savior, while others, including a cynical Batman and the conniving billionaire Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg), see him as an unchecked threat to humanity.
Lex Luthor orchestrates a series of events to frame Superman for international atrocities and stoke the fire of Batman’s obsession. While Clark Kent tries to investigate the “Bat of Gotham” for his brutal brand of justice, Bruce Wayne becomes consumed with stealing a cache of Kryptonite from LexCorp. Bruce believes that if there is even a “one percent chance” that Superman is an enemy, he must be destroyed, leading him to build a reinforced armored suit and specialized weaponry to level the playing field against the Kryptonian.
The conflict reaches a breaking point when Luthor kidnaps Martha Kent, forcing Superman to fight Batman to the death to save her. The two icons engage in a brutal, rain-soaked brawl in Gotham City. Just as Batman is about to deliver a fatal blow with a Kryptonite spear, Superman pleads for him to “Save Martha.” The realization that their mothers share the same name—and that Superman has a human heart—shatters Bruce’s rage, leading the two heroes to form an eleventh-hour alliance against Luthor’s true plan.
Luthor reveals his “silver lining”: a monstrous ancient Kryptonian deformity known as Doomsday, created from the corpse of General Zod. As the creature begins to level Metropolis, Batman and Superman are joined by the mysterious Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), who emerges from the shadows to help battle the beast. The “Trinity” fights a desperate battle against the evolving monster, but they soon realize that only the Kryptonite spear can stop Doomsday’s path of destruction.
In a climactic act of self-sacrifice, Superman impales Doomsday with the spear but is himself fatally stabbed by the creature’s bone protrusions. The world mourns the loss of its champion, and a guilt-ridden Bruce Wayne resolves to honor Superman’s legacy by seeking out other “metahumans” to form a league of heroes. The film ends with a hopeful tremor of dirt rising from Clark’s coffin, hinting that the Man of Steel will eventually return to lead the new team.
