Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) begins with the death of Superman (Henry Cavill), whose dying scream echoes across the cosmos, awakening the Mother Boxes—three ancient, sentient terraforming devices. This signal alerts Steppenwolf, an exiled lieutenant of the dark god Darkseid, who arrives on Earth with an army of Parademons to reclaim the boxes and initiate “The Unity.” If successful, the planet will be transformed into a wasteland resembling Darkseid’s home world, Apokolips, effectively wiping out all human life.
In response to this looming threat, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) work feverishly to recruit a team of metahumans to defend the planet. They seek out Arthur Curry (Aquaman), who is reluctant to leave the sea; Barry Allen (The Flash), a socially awkward youth with incredible speed; and Victor Stone (Cyborg), a former athlete rebuilt with alien technology who resents his new mechanical existence. Each hero must overcome personal trauma and isolation to join a cause larger than themselves, forming the foundation of the Justice League.
The narrative dives deep into the backstory of the Mother Boxes, revealing a “History Lesson” where the Old Gods, Amazons, Atlanteans, and humans once united to defeat Darkseid during his first invasion. In the present, Steppenwolf successfully seizes the boxes from Themyscira and Atlantis, leaving the League with one final gambit. Realizing they lack the power to stop him, they use the last Mother Box to resurrect Superman. Though initially confused and hostile, Clark Kent eventually regains his memories and humanity after a touching reunion with Lois Lane and Martha Kent.
The climax takes place in a desolate Russian nuclear site, where the League launches a coordinated assault to stop the Unity. While Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Cyborg fight Steppenwolf’s forces, a catastrophic failure occurs, and the Mother Boxes sync, beginning the planet’s destruction. In a breathtaking sequence, The Flash enters the Speed Force, running faster than light to reverse time by seconds, giving Cyborg the opening he needs to interface with the boxes and tear them apart with Superman’s help.
The film concludes with the definitive defeat of Steppenwolf and the League standing together as Earth’s protectors, watched from afar by a vengeful Darkseid. The “Epilogue” provides glimpses of a dark future—the Knightmare timeline—where Joker (Jared Leto) and Batman share a tense alliance in a world conquered by a corrupted Superman. Bruce awakens from this vision to meet the Martian Manhunter, who pledges his help for the wars to come, solidifying the League’s resolve to stay ready for Darkseid’s inevitable return.
